Situation

Dynegy Midwest Generation operates two Siemens Westinghouse 501 FD gas turbine units at its Pennsylvania co-generation facility. In an effort to optimize equipment reliability, the company approached ExxonMobil engineers for a lubricant solution capable of enhancing component protection and prolonging performance lifespan.

Benefit

Mobil DTE 832 turbine oil had helped extend oil life and increase equipment reliability to generate a company-estimated annual savings of US $100,000 in improved production availability and reduced labor expenses

Recommendation
#ExxonMobil engineers recommended implementing #MobilDTE™ 832 turbine oil. Formulated with premium hydrotreated basestocks and a proprietary additive system, Mobil DTE 832 provides exceptional thermal and oxidative stability for severe service applications. Further, to meet the significant load-carrying requirements of geared turbines, the lubricant is engineered with an advanced anti-wear system.

Impact
Since implementing Mobil DTE 832 turbine oil 11 years ago, Dynegy has recorded a number of performance achievements. After more than 48,000 hours in-service, there have been no system trips or unscheduled outages related to lubricant condition. During a scheduled shutdown, maintenance personnel and ExxonMobil engineers inspected the unit and confirmed that journal bearings have remained clean, while thrust bearings have avoided varnish buildup.
